July 15, 1930: Under beacon lights discontinued: "Barstow, Calif.--- Light formerly operated by Richfield Oil Co., located 3 miles northeast of the Lenwood intermediate landing field." (Air Commerce Bulletin)
June 29, 1930: Caption under a photo of the hotel. "New $180,000 hostelry at Barstow, such as eventually will dot the highways and airlanes of Pacific Coast states from Mexico to the Canadian border. The first unit, the Barstow Beacon tavern, was opened formally yesterday with many prominent Southern Californians attending the housewarming ceremonies. Despite the elaborateness of the place, it is a moderately priced overnight hotel, as will be the others in the multimillion-dollar chain. The hotel is two stories high, of gray stucco with red tile roof. It is of a true Spanish type architecture, with specially made furniture and interior decorations declared not to be reproduced elsewhere. May 4, 1933: "Ex-President Herbert Hoover, accompanied by Mrs. Hoover and party in three large autos, stopped at the Beacon Richfield station about 7:45 a.m. Tuesday morning, and were serviced by the attendant, Marvin Tinsley. October 28, 1934: "With the statement 'It makes me very unhappy to do this, but I need the money,' a lone bandit held up the Richfield Beacon service station in Barstow about 7:55 last night and escaped with $60, which he took from the cash register.
