SAN FRANCISCO BAY TOLL BRIDGE
August 15, 1929: "San Mateo, Calif.--The intensity of the two 24-inch rotating aeronautical lights and their directional projectors located on the lift span of San Francisco Bay Toll Bridge has been increased from 2,000,000 candlepower to 8,000,000 candlepower. These lights are maintained by the Richfield Oil Co." (Air Commerce Bulletin, Vol. 1, No. 4)
March 7, 1931: "Prospect that two aviation beacons on the 100-foot towers of the San Mateo bay bridge, maintained by the Richfield Oil company, will be removed in the near future was seen today in an announcement from Los Angeles that the oil company has decided to discontinue its beacons, according to United Press dispatches.
Word that the company plans removal of the San Mateo beacons has not been received by bridge officials here, it was stated today by W.F. Deuel, manager.
New government regulations which would require purchase of additional equipment and the fact that oil company officials believe the beacons have 'outlived their usefulness' as advertising, is the reason, it was stated in the news dispatch.
Dudley Field of the Richfield company was quoted as making the announcement. He stressed the fact that doing away with the beacons is 'not a question of finances,' said the dispatch. Aviation will not be affected by discontinuance of Richfield lights, since beacons have been erected by the department of commerce sufficient for present needs, Field said." (San Mateo Times)
